Tanya Bakken is a Controller and holds an MBA, currently serving Shattuck St. Mary's in Faribault. She grew up in Northfield and has deep roots in both communities. Tanya is looking forward to giving back in a meaningful way and is excited to bring her financial expertise and love for Rice County to the Rice County Area United Way board.
1) What motivates you to serve on the board for Rice County Area United Way?
I want to give back in a way that aligns with my skills and what I care about. My background in accounting and finance addresses a noted board need, and I'm drawn to United Way's work supporting the health and well-being of our community. I'm at a stage in life where I can meaningfully invest my time, and this feels like the right fit.
2) What's one of your favorite places in Rice County?
One of my favorite things to do is walk along the river and through downtown Northfield. I grew up there, so the memories are everywhere — what stores used to be, how things have changed over the years. It's just a place that feels like home. A close second is Riverbend Nature Center in Faribault. I used to trail run there all the time, and even though injuries have changed that, walking those trails is still something I really love.
3) Share what excites you most about our United Way.
What excites me most is honestly just how connected United Way is to the whole community — it's not one program or one cause; it's businesses, schools, families, and nonprofits all working toward the same thing. The youth opportunity work really speaks to me, and knowing it's happening in both Faribault and Northfield — two places I care deeply about — makes it feel personal.
